SOS – Hot Summer Harvest

I had been out of town during the big heat wave so was shocked when I got back and our grapes had gone from a Brix of 22 to 26 in the blink of a week. 26 is over the suggested harvest goal of 24/25 so we needed to get on it. Fortunately, Bill and Greg, our winemakers, were able to squeeze us in for a Saturday, Sept. 10th harvest, and John Benson and Carlos were able to oversee our group of friends who turned out to help us. Thank you Robin and Nick, Linda (who has her own vineyard), Page and Bill, Orsi, Ivan, and Marcus, Ricky, Cat and Shane. We got lucky and the 95 degree plus days had stopped and we had a pleasant 75 for a quick 90 min harvest session followed by a leisurely lunch. This year we just tucked our 725 lbs. of Grenache and Syrah grapes into Doug’s truck and now don’t have a care in the world. In the future, we will likely make our own wine, but not this year.

We still have quite a few berries along the creek which weren’t quite ripe enough for sending off. Will give grape jam a go later this month.
